Why We Built Rasoi Rani: An AI Kitchen Sakhi from a Town Quick Commerce Forgot

I live in Gadhinglaj, a town in Kolhapur district where no ten-minute grocery app delivers. When I open Instagram, I see an India of instant everything. When I step out of my door, I see the India most Indians actually live in — where the kirana bhaiya writes your bill by hand, where nobody tracks what's in the fridge, and where perfectly good food quietly rots at the back of the shelf every single week.

For over a decade I've traded natural jaggery through Good Farm Foods. I've seen the food value chain up close, from farm to kitchen. And the leak that bothered me most wasn't in the fields or the trucks. It was in our own homes.

The problem hiding in plain sight

The numbers are hard to ignore. According to the UN Environment Programme's Food Waste Index, Indian households throw away an estimated 78 million tonnes of food every year — roughly 55 kg per person, second only to China in absolute terms. Analysts peg the economic value of India's wasted food at around ₹1.55 lakh crore annually. Globally, 60% of all food waste happens at the household level — not in restaurants, not in shops. In our kitchens.

And this isn't only a money problem. Food loss and waste generate an estimated 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions — several times the aviation industry — while nearly 194 million Indians remain undernourished.

What every home kitchen quietly fights

Talk to any household managing a kitchen and the same battles come up. Nobody actually knows what's in the pantry, so the same dal gets bought twice while the tomatoes from last week turn to mush. Expiry dates live in memory, not in any system. The kirana bill is a handwritten Marathi or Hindi scrawl no app on earth could read — until now. Grocery prices swing wildly between the local shop and the quick-commerce apps, and there's no easy way to compare. And at 6 pm every evening comes the eternal question: "aaj kya banau?" — with whatever is actually in the fridge.

Each of these is a small daily leak. Together, families lose a meaningful slice of their monthly grocery budget to waste, duplicate purchases and overpaying.

So we built Rasoi Rani

Rasoi Rani ("Kitchen Queen") is an AI kitchen sakhi built for Bharat, in the Hinglish that Indian kitchens actually speak. Here is what it does, in plain terms:

Bill Scan that reads handwriting. Point the camera at a handwritten kirana bill — Hindi, Marathi, shorthand and all — and Rani turns it into a digital pantry. Our proprietary library of kirana shorthand patterns lifted scanning accuracy from around 60% to over 85% in our internal testing, and it improves with every bill.

A pantry that watches expiry for you. Everything scanned gets tracked, and Rani nudges you before food goes bad — so the palak gets cooked, not composted.

Recipes from what you already have. Over 1,000 Indian recipes with smart substitutions, so "aaj kya banau" gets answered from your actual fridge, not a fantasy one.

Smart Basket price comparison. Compare grocery prices before you buy, and contribute to a growing pincode-level price map that makes the app smarter for every neighbour who joins.

Why Gadhinglaj is the advantage, not the excuse

Most consumer apps are designed in metros and then "adapted" for Bharat. We inverted that. Rasoi Rani's OCR was trained on real handwritten bills from real kirana shops in our own town. Its price intelligence starts at the pincode level, where national apps have no data at all. Its voice is Hinglish because that's how our users actually talk. Building from a Tier-2 town isn't a limitation we overcame — it's the product insight everything else is built on.

Where we are on the road to launch

A few milestones, stated exactly as they are:

Play Store. Our Google Play Console organisation account is verified under Good Farm Foods, and the app is now officially live on the Google Play Store.

Swiggy Builders Club — approved. Rasoi Rani has been approved into Swiggy's Builders Club, the invite-led program giving builders access to Swiggy's MCP servers and API tools across Instamart, Food and Dineout. We've built and successfully run a working OAuth prototype against the live Swiggy Instamart MCP endpoint. Swiggy's MCP speaks in natural language designed for AI agents — and Rasoi Rani's existing Gemini-powered agent layer is exactly the kind of consumer that infrastructure was built for. Formal integration paperwork is in progress; we'll share more as it lands in the app.

Google for Startups. We've participated in the Google for Startups Cohort India 2026 (Agentic AI track) and are on stage at the Vande Bharatam grand finale this August. We'll share outcomes here — the good and the honest.

The impact we're aiming for

Every kilogram of food a family doesn't waste is money back in their pocket, methane that never leaves a landfill, and a small correction to the absurdity of a country that wastes food while millions go hungry. We're not claiming we'll solve India's food waste crisis. We're claiming something smaller and more honest: we can help one household at a time waste less, spend smarter, and answer "aaj kya banau?" with confidence. At India's scale, small and honest compounds fast.
